Late Edwardian / Early Art Deco 1.15 Carat Old European Cut Diamond and Sapphire Engagement Ring

Date: c. 1920s (the ring has a 1929 date engraved into the inner shank)

Design information: This stunning piece was created in the mid-late 1920s while the Art Deco movement was just gaining traction. As Art Deco was still in its nascency, the ring shows considerable Edwardian influence as well (Edwardian design preceded Art Deco). The ornate and curvilinear hand-engraving, as well as the creative employment of open filigree in the shoulders, recalls the best of Edwardian jewelry output. Yet the juxtaposition of diamonds and sapphires and overall design of the piece when viewed from the top-down anticipated some of the defining characteristics of Art Deco jewelry.
